There is an authentic Iranian revolution underway targeting the Islamic Republic that clings to power in Tehran. Iranians, especially courageous young women, want to bring down the radical Islamist dictatorship that has ruled — and ruined — their lives. This 2022 Iranian Revolution represents the greatest opportunity for the Iranian people to secure the dignity, justice, and fundamental rights they have sought since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Put simply, the Iranian people are demanding regime change. To advance both its values and its security, the United States should be using its power to severely weaken and, if fortunate, collapse the regime.
While we are hopeful the Biden administration will throw its support behind this new Iranian revolution, we are not naïve. The administration’s top priority is still to revive a weakened version of the deeply flawed 2015 nuclear deal. Despite the president’s commitment to “free Iran,” his aides flooded the airwaves to insist Biden was merely expressing “solidarity” and there has been no change in U.S. policy.
This needs to change: Washington should implement a strategy of maximum support for the Iranian people. What’s more, it should bring coherence to its overall Iran policy by renouncing the pursuit of a nuclear deal that would provide roughly $275 billion of sanctions relief to the clerical dictatorship in the first year and $1 trillion dollars by 2031, when the deal expires.
FDD has produced the map below for policymakers, the media, and the American people to fully appreciate the scope and breadth of these protests. It contains information on the XXXX documented protests in Iran since September 16, 2022. This map will be updated regularly.
Methodology and Sources: FDD’s real-time data on the number of protests is compiled through open-source reporting. A source link is available for each protest. The data on the estimated number of arrests, injuries, and deaths is compiled through the latest reports by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).
